Do you accept insurance?
Yes, however, if you choose, paying out of pocket frees us from having to put a diagnosis, which insurance companies require, and which becomes a permanent part of your health records. In addition, many patients feel that mental health diagnoses, like other labels, can be misleading, stigmatizing, and dehumanizing.
In addition, keep in mind that it’s important that you are aware of the limits of confidentiality when deciding to use your insurance benefits for therapy. If you decide to use your insurance, note that they will require for you to receive a mental health diagnoses in order to justify coverage. This could have a effect on your future premiums since this diagnosis will go on your health care record. Paying out-of-pocket for therapy services ensures complete confidentiality, as we will not have to provide a diagnosis or any other documentation to a third-party payer.
Please note that benefits are an agreement between you and your insurance company. We cannot guarantee any insurance coverage or reimbursement. If you have eligibility concerns or questions, you should contact your insurance provider directly.
How can I use my out of network (OON) benefits?
If you have health insurance through another insurance company, we are happy to provide the necessary documentation for you to file for reimbursement. Upon your request, a superbill for therapy services will be provided so you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Submitting a superbill for reimbursement may carry a degree of risk to confidentiality, privacy, or to future capacity to obtain health or life insurance or employment.
We make no guarantees about the level of reimbursement you may receive. It’s your responsibility to research insurance coverage before beginning therapy. We recommend that you consult your insurer and research the following prior to our first session:
- Do I have mental health insurance benefits?
- What are my Out Of Network, Mental Health insurance benefits?
- Are services provided by a licensed clinical social worker covered? My license in the state of FL is SW 14220, CT is 12991, MA is 125065
- If I have out-of-network benefits, will I be reimbursed the full amount I paid or a portion?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
- Is pre-authorization required from my insurance company or primary care physician prior to mental health services to be reimbursed?
- Does my insurer cover the procedural codes: 90837 (Individual session), 90847 (family session), 90791 (Intake Evaluation)?
Medicare/Medicaid recipients: Mamay In Bloom Counseling has opted-out of providing services through the medicare/medicaid program which means that out of network reimbursements will not be available.
What is therapy? How is therapy different from talking to friends or family?
Therapy is an opportunity to have a trained professional help, support and assist you in thinking objectively about yourself and your struggles. By working with a therapist, you develop coping skills, will be better able to manage your emotions, and gain perspective. We will work together to help you manage how you’re feeling, thinking, and responding to the many difficulties that arise when you are transitioning through motherhood.
What about medications?
There are different medications to treat postpartum depression, but research has shown that the combination of medication and psychotherapy provides the greatest long-term solution for the pain caused by mental and emotional problems. Not all symptoms lend themselves to medication, but many do. Medication gives way to important symptom relief that allows a person to function and make the most out of therapy. However, medication can only help so much and is not necessary to achieve positive therapeutic results. Therapy addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that hinder our progress. Optimal and sustainable wellbeing is often achieved with an integrative approach to total wellness.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. However, if you would like your therapist to talk to someone (for example your physician, psychiatrist, etc.) then you can sign a release for us to do so. There are also some exceptions to confidentiality. Because mental health therapists are mandated reporters, we are required to report child abuse, elder abuse, or if we feel you are a danger to yourself or others. Please read the informed consent for more details or feel free to ask us questions for clarification.
How often do we meet?
Sessions are typically 45-50 minutes and are scheduled weekly most often. Often times, our clients have been struggling with challenging situations by the time they come in for the initial session. Therefore weekly sessions will enable us to work towards your goals in an efficient way. As therapy progresses, we will determine if weekly sessions continue to be helpful, or if more or less time should pass between sessions.
What is the origin of the word “Mamay” and why did you pick it?
Our founder picked the word “Mamay” because it means mother in Quechua, which is an indigenous language spoken primarily by the people living in the Andes Mountains and highlands of South America. Being a mother of two and born in Peru, she felt a connection with the word “Mamay” and thought it was a good fit to represent herself, the practice and the community we care for.
